Last Monday I took the plunge, I decided to install Vista Enterprise on my tablet PC. Installation was quick, about 30 minutes, and the support of drivers was good. Windows Update detected new drivers for my video and sound cards, most of the other drivers where found immediately. Only drivers that are still needed are for my bluetooth and wireless cards, but those have to come from Toshiba and they haven’t released any drivers for the final versions yet. The same holds true for the added utilities (like auto-rotate when going into tablet mode), but I can wait a little bit.
Vista works fast, no difference noticeable between XP Tablet and Vista right now. I installed Office 2007 Enterprise, the New York Times Reader (which refused to work on my XP configuration) and some other cool tools. Still have to install MindManager and GoBinder, but classes are almost over and those apps are not needed immediately. That can wait until X-mas, when I have a couple of days off.

Thank you for the article. Intrestingly enough, I too have a Tecra M4 Tablet and cannot get Vista Business to install due to the BIOS. Currently running at the latest release from Toshiba 1.70 but no luck. How did you get past this? Thanks

Toshiba has released the new BIOS driver for tecra M4, you can find it here:

How’s the upgrade working with your tablet? Have you been able to get the rotate buttons to work? I have a multi-dock II and I have a little trouble with the screens adjusting from two to one and back automatically when I undock and then dock again.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
The upgrade went great, but due to an unfortunate accident my tablet broke down. Since then I switched to a MacBook, which works fine (but a lot different than a tablet). My Tecra M4 will return from repairs sometime soon (when the insurance pays the bill), then I’ll also be back in Vista world.
