The Admirals and Rhein Fire don’t like each other very much. That’s cool. Being Limburgian and feeling more towards Koln in my Vastelaovend tradition makes me dislike Dusseldorf more. But everyone has to acknowledge Brehmstrasse as the center of love for American Sports in Europe.

Brehmstrasse used to be the home of the Dusseldorf Metro Stars, the local hockey team. Whenever someone with a Brehmstrasse or Dusseldorf shirt walks in, you know you see someone with a love for American sports. And tonight it happened once again. I was standing in my local bar, wearing my USC sweater (it’s gameday, USC plays Cal, Notre Dame receives Army and the Wolverines go to Ohio) waiting for next weeks game. Everyone knows the NC game will be the Irish vs Michigan, as Michigan will beat OSU (which will boost ND’s ranking) and ND will beat USC next week. I’m feeling guilty, not to defend Irish colors, but until next week Kylie’s wish is my command.

Anyway, this guy comes to the bar, wearing a Dusseldorf sweater. My first question is if he’s German, then my Kolsch would come in handy. But he’s Dutch, Admirals fan (post-Warner, so not in my league), but most importantly, a hockey fan and a American Sports believer. Too bad he supports the wrong teams, he likes Calgary, I like Vancouver, but we both like the Penguins (Sidney is tha man). We decided to disagree upon our preferences and to meet again at an Admirals game next season. I always enjoy talking to people who like sports I like, but especially when they know the history of the sports in Europe. We really connected when I mentioned Brehmstrasse, I think that will be the magic word for many years to distinguish fans of American Sports, not just hockey, in Europe.

Go Canucks!! And Go Irish!!
